Moab scenery stunning

As scenic views go, it doesn't get any better than this. The end of this ride overlooks a giant maze of layered sandstone canyons carved for eons by the Colorado River. Adding to the perspective, Wingate-formation cliffs are prominent on the opposite horizon, including the famous Dead Horse Point overlook. The unique views are simply stunning.

The ride out to the point isn't particularly scenic, crossing a high, fairly flat mesa. There are some patches of Entrada Slickrock, but most riding is on quiet, wide dirt roads with few obstacles.

The last weeks in October can be busy in Moab. However, this ride remains uncrowded. Camping at Hatch Point is on a first-come basis, so have alternative plans in case the campground is full.

IF YOU GO

Bicycle: Mountain bike

Location: Southwest of Moab, Utah

Surface: Smooth dirt road with some rocks, wide single-track

Distance: Out and back is 12.4 miles

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. No big hills, but long when hot

Ride time: Three to four hours

To reach Canyonlands Overlook: From Moab, take Highway 191 (Main Street) south about 32 miles and go west at the signed intersection for Canyon Rims Recreation Area. Continue driving on pavement for 14 more miles, before going right on a gravel road. Drive for eight more miles, then park at a turnout near the intersection with a dirt road going west.

    OTHER RIDES

  • Canyonland Overlook return option: At 11.9 miles on the return leg, head east to drop into Dripping Springs Canyon. An arch is visible on the opposite canyon wall. The riding surface is similar here but descends more steeply. Watch downhill speeds in sandy washes. Pick up the road and go right at 13.5 miles, pass the road to Hatch Point Camp Ground. Total mileage for this route is 15.8 miles. The Anticline Overlook is well worth the drive, as is the Needles Overlook, which is found on the road going back.

  • Back of Behind: Going south on Highway 191 for 13 miles, trail-head parking is signed at the top of prominent hill. This area is home to the 24 Hours of Moab race, held Oct. 14 and 15 this year. Local shops will have maps, which are recommended because of the number and variety of trail options found here. Crossing a high, flat valley going northwest, trails lead to Prostitute Arch and a loop option on the race course. Or continue along a ridge above Kane Creek to descend past Pritchett Arch and into Pritchett Canyon. It joins a paved road along the Colorado River to end in Moab. This last option is moderate to advanced with rocky descents and sandy washes. A shuttle vehicle is advised, and bring $2 to cross some private property at the end.
