CUSTOM-FITTED CLUBS

By Stan Sayers
Director of instruction, Grand Golf

There are a number of questions that arise whenever someone first considers getting fitted for golf clubs. Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions and answers, which I hope show the difference club fitting can make to your game.

  • Why should I get fitted for clubs instead of buying clubs "off the rack?"

Let me put it this way: Buying clubs off the rack is like walking into a shoe store and buying shoes without giving your size or even trying them on. When you leave the store you might really like your new shoes, but what happens when the shoes are two sizes too small? You'll start curling up your toes and walking on your heels. Before you know it, you'll be hunched over and your whole body will hurt. This is just like golf clubs. If your clubs don't fit you properly, you'll start making adjustments to make them work -- adjustments that hurt your overall game.

  • The term "custom fit" has an expensive ring to it. Won't I be paying a lot more for custom-fitted clubs?

Fitted clubs usually cost the same as the clubs the major manufacturers put on the shelves. The difference is, once you buy custom-fitted clubs, you won't be searching for the perfect set because you will have the set that fits you.

  • Do you fit for my swing, and all its flaws, or a correct swing?

Custom-fitted clubs are only as good as the "fitter." Instruction goes hand in hand with fitting. I will work with a player to get a swing that is balanced. If the equipment isn't right it might be impossible to achieve that balance. Once we have identified that swing and fit the clubs accordingly, the player will improve much faster because the clubs will reward a good swing instead of a poor swing. As a player's swing improves, we might need to make future adjustments. But those adjustments will be minor and there will be no need to go out and buy new equipment.

  • What if I don't like the clubs the instructor says are "right" for me?

Many times players will come in with a notion of what kind of club is "right" for them. I always say, let's see what the fitting tells us and then talk about it. The fitting process is a team decision. I spend a lot of time getting feedback from a student before we make a final decision on clubs. How does the club feel to you? Does it feel heavy, light? How does it look? Does the look instill confidence? When I get the right club in a player's hand, the results will speak for themselves.
