Shannon Grabow brought her dog, Bindigo, to see the holiday lights at the City and County Building Thursday night. "It puts me in a Christmas-y spirit," said the 25-year-old Denver resident. Grabow was among those who huddled in the 39-degree weather Thursday night to watch the annual ceremony, now in its 65th year. The lighting of the City and County Building is sponsored by News4, which also broadcast the ceremony live Thursday. Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife, Wilma, were joined by 12-year-old Zak Rossbach of Monument, to flip a giant red switch to turn on the lights. Zak, who is recovering from aplasmic anemia, was picked by Make-A-Wish Foundation for the honor. Brad Bellmer, 30, of Denver decided to use the glowing city hall as the backdrop for a family portrait. He said he was glad to see a giant nativity on city hall steps, despite a protest against it last year. "It lets people see the real reason for the season," he said. His 6-year-old daughter, Demi, couldn't stop looking at the lights. "I like them," she said. "They're so pretty. We should put them up on our house."
