Hundreds expected at Denver, Boulder events
By Jean TorkelsonDenver Rocky Mountain News Religion Writer
Hundreds are expected to attend Colorado events celebrating the start of Hanukkah tonight. State Treasurer Mike Coffman will light the menorah at 4:40 p.m. at the Allied Jewish Federation, 300 S. Dahlia St., Denver. Individuals and organizations will take turns lighting each night's menorah on the federation grounds every night through next Thursday. In Boulder, the "Light One Candle Unity Rally" begins at 6 p.m. today. It's being held to support Israel in its present crisis as well as to commemorate Hanukkah, which recalls a similarly chaotic time in Israel's history that culminated in the rebuilding of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem more than two millennia ago. The rally is on the Pearl Street Mall in front of the Boulder County Courthouse. Participants will get an update on the situation in the Middle East by professor Jonathan Adelman of the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies. Holocaust survivor Ben Bennoun will light the giant menorah. Rabbi Douglas Weber of Congregation Bonai Shalom will officiate at the ceremony, which will include traditional holidays prayers and songs from the Congregation Har Hashem Children's Choir. The annual observance of Hanukkah lasts for eight days. It refers to the miraculous extension of oil, which kept temple lamps burning for eight days after Jews had reclaimed the sacred sanctuary following its desecration by Syrian marauders in 165 B.C. The incident inspired the name Festival of Lights, and will be marked in many of Colorado's 63,000 Jewish households with the lighting of a menorah in their own homes at sundown.
