Denver was ready for professional baseball when the Denver Bears came out of the past and started playing at Merchants' Park on South Broadway. It soon became clear that the old ballpark wouldn't hold all the fans who wanted to see the games.

The photograph on yellowed newsprint shows Louis Wright standing amid a thousand points of light, as if his head is among the stars. Teammates Rubin Carter, Jim Ryan and Dennis Smith are coming toward him, and now that you look, those points of light are everywhere.

Nevertheless, this week even late arrivals are required to have memories of Mile High Stadium. And one of the most lasting for me is of Michael Dean Perry dawdling. Didn't get his fat frame off the field in time. Remember? Cost the Denver Broncos the game against Jacksonville and reduced the Broncos from three Super Bowls to two.
