When it was completed in 1892, the Brown Palace Hotel became
the most recognizable landmark of the burgeoning Denver skyline.
However, pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson probably
didn't shoot his photo until at least 1911, after completion of the
D&F Tower, which looms in the left background.
When nature photographer John Fielder arrived last year to duplicate
the shot, the building that Jackson had stood atop was long gone.
Fielder stalked different floors of 1670 Broadway to assess how high
Jackson was. He decided the fifth floor was the spot.
Other than the Brown Palace, virtually nothing in Jackson's cityscape
is visible in Fielder's.
