Looking east toward Golden with North Table Mountain on the left
and South Table Mountain on the right, William Henry Jackson probably took this shot in the
early 1880s, when the city was a major freight nexus.
In the central foreground of Jackson's photo, Clear Creek is a wide,
shallow, meandering stream. The large burst of smoke in the back
could be the brewery built by Adolph Coors. In John Fielder's
photo, taken last year, there's no missing the towering contemporary
presence of Coors with its looming bright red sign.
Despite the changes, Fielder had little trouble finding the spot where
Jackson stood, using the butte to the right of South Table Mountain
to assess Jackson's elevation.
