Action filed earlier in year by families of 5 other victims
By Karen AbbottDenver Rocky Mountain News Staff Writer
The parents of slain Columbine student Cassie Bernall joined five other families Wednesday in a federal lawsuit against Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone and others over the deaths of their children. Bradly and Misty Bernall, whose daughter, Cassie, died in the school library, were not involved previously in any of the several suits filed in various courts over the April 20, 1999, slayings. The Bernalls joined a federal lawsuit filed earlier this year against Stone and other Sheriff's Office officials by the families of slain Columbine students Daniel Rohrbough, Kelly Fleming, Matthew Kechter, Lauren Townsend and Kyle Velasquez. Defendants were added to the case Wednesday: The parents of teen gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold; and three young people who helped the two killers obtain guns they were too young to buy legally: Phillip Duran, Mark Manes and Robyn Anderson. Harris and Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded more than 20 others at the school before taking their own lives. The lawsuit contends that sheriff's officials ignored information that Harris and Klebold were dangerous and failed to protect the students at the school after the shootings and bombings began. Claims added Wednesday accuse the parents of Harris and Klebold of failing to properly supervise their sons. Other new claims contend that Duran, Manes and Anderson bear some responsibility for the murders and injuries because they helped Harris and Klebold obtain guns. August 10, 2000
