    Slain teacher's daughter buys reports

11,000-page account by police of 1999's Columbine shootings on sale for $602 each

GOLDEN Dave Sanders' daughter shelled out $602 Tuesday for 11,000 pages of police reports about the Columbine High shootings that claimed her father's life.

"I bought it for my mom, not for me," Cindy Thirouin said. "She wanted a copy. If my husband was murdered, I'd want to know everything that happened that day."

She was the only person not from the media to purchase one of 12 copies sold Tuesday, the first day the reports were made available to the public.

Jefferson County authorities objected to the release and only did so after a judge, on Nov. 13, ordered them to do so.

Dave Sanders was the lone teacher among the 13 people murdered at Columbine on April 20. After being shot while warning students to escape, he bled to death in the science room waiting for help to arrive.

Thirouin criticized the timing of the report's release.

"It's bad timing, coming out the week of Thanksgiving," she said. "It would have been better to come out with it after the first of the year, not during the holidays. It opens up wounds, so it's difficult to heal."

The $602 price for the 11,000 pages represents only the cost of printing, said John Masson, Jefferson County's director of public information.

Copies may be purchased from the Jefferson County Public Information Department, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Suite 5530, Golden, Colo. An additional charge is required for mailing.

Anyone can view the documents for free at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday next week.

The county's public library system also will obtain a number of copies, three sets of which will be available at the Columbine Library just west of the school in Clement Park, said Kay Pride, library spokeswoman.
