THE 13TH DOOR

Cost: $14.95 with a can of food; $15.95 without. VIP admission (skip the line) is $19.95.

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: A new house on the scene this year, the 13th Door leads visitors through a tour of a turn-of-the- century hotel where a psycho is lopping off hands to collect jewelry.

THE 25TH HOUR

Buckingham Square at Havana and Mississippi Avenue; next to Mervyn's; www.hour25hour.com; 720-339-8445

Cost: $14.95 with can of food; $15.95 without.

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: Groups of 10 or less are sent into the mall's "mansion" for a guided tour and are soon left on their own to find their way through the interactive adventure dotted with high-tech haunts, tight corners and the ubiquitous spinning tunnel.

AFRAID OF THE DARK

Cost: $12.95

What's so scary: An asylum packed with inmates (some on the loose) and disorienting rooms will give visitors a sense of vertigo, déjà vu and a nasty case of the creeps by the time they leave.

BOOVILLE

Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Through Oct. 31

What's so scary: Not exactly a haunted house, this Halloween attraction caters to toddlers to 9-year-olds with an assortment of crafts and games.

BRUTAL PLANET

Six Flags at Elitch Gardens, Speer Boulevard and Interstate 25; www.sixflags.com/parks/elitchgardens; 303-595-4386

Cost: $5, plus park admission ($36.99).

Hours: Dusk to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: A mix of everything from sci-fi to rock 'n' roll, horror and modern dance, Brutal Planet crams it all into 10,500 feet of high-tech haunts heavy on props and special effects.

CARN-EVIL HAUNTED HOUSE

What's so scary: Clowns give you the willies? Then this is the house for you, where anyone wearing big shoes and greasepaint is out for big screams, not big laughs. The carnival theme extends throughout the newly designed house where a spinning tunnel of polka dots and a striped room are all the more disorienting seen through 3-D glasses.

FIELD OF CORPSES

What's so scary: This tour-guided gore show is full of haunting sets, from a field of corn to a forest of dead trees to a root cellar — all of which are populated by a troupe of well-heeled ghoulish corpses, goblins and zombies, out to annoy and unsettle everyone who walks through.

FRIGHTMARE

108th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard; www.denverhaunted houses.com; 303-439-7391

Cost: $13, $19 for VIP (skip the line) tickets.

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: Colorado's most venerable outdoor haunt takes visitors through an authentic cornfield and farmhouse full of both live and animatronic frights.

HAUNTED MANSION

Cost: $12

Hours: 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 p.m. to midnight Friday; 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday; 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: More like a Disney haunt, this perennial favorite doesn't aim for the "flight or fight" approach. Rather it encourages visitors to linger and look at some of the region's top illusions, costumes and tricks of the trade.

MURRAY HAUNTED HOUSE

Hours: 6:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday; 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: Heavy on scenery but light on action, this first-year haunt sets visitors loose inside an 11,000-foot barn that includes a cellar, slaughterhouse and a select group of actors mingling among the props.

NIGHTMARE AT SPIDER MANSION

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. (Also 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday). Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: One of the region's most original haunts, Spider Mansion is full of tight, dark turns, authentic frights and a chilling theater scene at the end that's been given an extra boost this season.

NIGHTMARE FACTORY

120th Avenue and Interstate 25, at Boondocks Fun Center; www.getscared.com; 303-453-0359

Cost: $13; VIP tickets (skip the lines) are $18.

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 7 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Through Oct. 31.

What's so scary: Strobe lights, well-placed props and dedicated "monsters" who know how to time their delivery stand out at this house set up in the parking lot of Boondocks.

PRIMITIVE FEAR

North of Mile High Greyhound Park at 5155 E. 64th Ave. in Commerce City; 303-814-0411

Cost: $14

Hours: Opens nightly at 6:30 p.m.

What's so scary: Start with the disorienting fog- and strobe-filled anteroom and finish with one of the region's best outdoor mazes. In between, beware of the walls and the costumed characters in camouflage.

SCREAMS FROM THE PAST

Cost: Free with park admission ($36.99)

Hours: Dusk to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

What's so scary: Long hallways populated by characters from horror movies, Screams from the Past offers a more traditional haunt than its high-tech twin at Elitch Gardens.

SCREAM PARK

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Monday though Thursday and Sunday.

Cost: $12 per house

What's so scary: Three houses in one spot, Scream Park offers different frights for every crowd, including a room of interactive TVs, a half-dozen chainsaw-wielding fiends, a sewer that actually reeks and a haunted trailer park.

TERROR IN THE CORN

Hours: 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Cost: $15; $13 for children/seniors

What's so scary: A tractor-driven cart drops you off in the middle of Anderson Farm's corn maze, and the frights begin. A headless horseman, an authentic ghost town and actors brandishing shovels, rakes and farm equipment populate the countryside.
