Best Hut System: 10th Mountain Division Hut SystemNo question, really: The finest hut skiing in Colorado can be found along the hundreds of miles of trails in the scenic mountain area between Leadville, Vail and Aspen. Named for the famous World War II ski troopers who trained in the area before going overseas, the 10th Mountain Division Hut System has grown to include 17 overnight accommodations. Each hut comes provisioned with the basic necessities, including a woodburning stove, firewood, electric lights, cookstoves and cookware. Outhouse facilities and sleeping quarters with mattresses make for comfortable stays, and some even feature an opportunity to sweat in a sauna. Although the word hut implies a small building, most are surprisingly large, with an attractive two-story, wood-frame design that sleeps 16 people. A couple of privately run lodging options also fit into the trail system. The absolutely stunning views will bring you back again and again, with standouts being the Shrine Mountain Inn and Fowler/Hilliard huts. Originally built for skiing, this extensive hut system now entices guests year-round who hike or ski into these backcountry destinations. Well-marked, well-used trails follow recommended routes to the huts, but a maze of side routes veer away and surround the basic trail system, providing unlimited opportunities for discovery. Just be prepared and stay within your experience level. The huts have very reasonable rates (this is managed as a nonprofit system), but reserve early to avoid disappointment. Call (970) 925-5775.
